The would-be thief should have been the one trying to make a quick escape, not his intended victim. Was this set up, and if so why?

It looks genuine enough. I don't think I would have hung around. Why would she?
hard to say, it looks pretty convincing, either that it's a promo for women's safety...

She had the opportunity to effect a citizens arrest. And she'd nothing to fear as she'd clearly got the measure of the thief.
i would think the bloke would have scarpered, perhaps she knew him...
a swift kick in the proverbials was the better option, could be a set up, as said its hard to say if this is real
Was she suppose to hang around to see how quickly he recovered and hope he wasn't carrying a knife.
I don't think many would have gone for a citizen's arrest. He tried to steal her phone - she retrieved it. End of story really.

Nobody else think it incongruous that she ran and he lingered?
He wasn't lingering. He was rolling on the floor in agony.

When was the last time someone kicked you in the gonads like that?
Question Author
It wasn't today, or yesterday. Even so, if I'd been in his painful position I'd have made an effort to crawl away before I was arrested.
SET UP!! No doubt about it. Off to the gym now, so don't mess with me either!! lol
thieves aren't always the brightest tool in the box,
she probably did a runner because she was frightened of being sued by the mugger
This was in the USA it says 'cell phone' not 'mobile' is citizen's arrest possible there?
The thief didn't 'hang around ' sandy she had kicked him in the nuts , looked like a karate kick with high heels , he was disabled with pain.

Was Beadle about?

or

Did they get their £250 from Harry Hill?
IMO this is not a genuine attack. Aside from the amazingly central positioning of the action on camera. the way the woman kicks the man to the groin and the way he reacts is exactly how stage fighting set pieces are taught, especially the crucial part of the man's back being to the audience. The kick is taken in the side of the thigh followed by the dramatic fall to the knees etc.
I think in a real fight the man would have seen the kick coming and either backed away or run off, plus in a real fight I think he would have hot harder and really hurt the woman.
If it's intended to be an ad for women's safety it gives out lots of unsafe messages - eg hang around places where you might get attacked, display your valuables, and attempt to tackle an assailant who is larger than you and may be very violent.
In fact being geeky and having watched again frame by frame I don't think the kick actually makes any contact
