Over the last week or so I have received about 20 identical emails, supposedly from Microsoft, ([email protected]) with the following message 'Dear friend , use this Internet Explorer patch now! There are dangerous virus in the Internet now! More than 500.000 already infected! ' There is a file attachment called patch.exe. For obvious reasons I have ignored it, but I just wondered if anyone knows what this is about.

microsoft will never mail you with a patch .its definitely dodgy.
Send a copy to Microsoft and ask them.
Agree with stephen.hove. Microsoft never send out e-mails with patches attached. If you want a patch from microsoft you always have to go to their site and download it.
It is a virus, this link tells you all about it: http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/w32dumaru

As per Stephen and Rinky's answers, Microsoft NEVER send patches out in an e-mail (most of them are too big to be honest). Check this out :- http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.
