There is no clear answer to this, but the first time a similar idea seems to make an appearance in English literature is in John Gower's 'Confessio Amantis' (c. 1390): 'Bot as men sein, wher herte is failed, Ther schal no castell ben assailed'. This sentiment seems to have developed over the next few centuries and can be found in many other writings, for example:

'A coward verely neuer obteyned the loue of a faire lady.' (1545, R. Taverner tr. Erasmus' Adages)

'Faint hart Philautus neither winneth Castell nor Lady: therfore endure all thinges that shall happen with patience.' (1580, Lyly, Euphues & his England)

'Faint heart neuer wonne faire Lady.' (1614, W. Camden, Remains concerning Britain)
