How Do I Defeat The First Level Boss On The Original Xbox Game Gunvalkyrie?

I am able to get the boss past the first phase where you shoot his underside but after that I can spend about an hour shooting at it from all different angles and nothing seems to happen. Any help would be appreciated, thank you.
