Dell D600 - Wired Internet

This is odd, and I bet the answer is simple

My wife has a Dell D600 and it works like a charm - on wifi

But when I plug a cable into the RJ45 socket, NO lights come on at the network switch and IPCONFIG only shows a wifi network interface

It's almost as though the wired ethernet port hasn't been enabled somehow

What do I need to do to get her a wired connection?

Thanks

1. Control Panel
2. check Network Connections
3. If there are red crosses on the LANs you need to
4. left of page 'Make a new connection'
just noticed on my Dell. Bottom taskbar has icon for network connection, click it to go direct to network connections.

OK, logs of you have asked so

The other end of the cable is a Draytek Vigor 2830n wireless ADSL/2 router

When the cable is plugged in NO lights illuminate on the router

And I say again, ipconfig shows NOTHING for the wired LAN port

Not just "no IP address" but no output for the RJ45 whatsoever - only for the wireless LAN adapter

I am as sure as I can be that the problem is with the laptop not the LAN setup - otherwise I'd see the RJ45 LAN connection in ipconfig, but without any active IP address. I don't

It's not there

At all

Nor in Windows Control Panel

All that happens is one LED on the RJ45 is on - seemingly at all times

Maybe I have a dead LAN port

Yeah, it's pre-owned and I didn't check the LAN port when we bought it a couple of years ago. Ah well, thanks all for your help
