Try it. I guarantee it works. I speak from experience.
The free and easy way to avoid other people and gain confidence is to look in the mirror every day for at least five minutes smile, make faces etc... and then go out the house grinning and just watch how many people smile cos your smilin I love it.
I say Take Charge. We usually feel low in confidence becasue people or circumstances affect us. If you start to make decisions about these things you will start to feel in control and that gives you confidence in yourself. It took me a long time to realise this but it certainly works. Especially if you take charge of the things you fear the most. A real confidence booster.
sirt down and write yourself a letter listing your wonderful and unique qualities. When confidence flags, think of the letter or take it out and read it. You could also put it on the fridge or the bathroom mirror, somewhere you will see oit every day. Recognise and celebrate what a unique and special person you are.
As corny as it sounds, just have some belief in yourself and your abilties and take pride in your achievements. Don't compare yourself unfavourably to other people unless it's in a constructive way, e.g. if someone's got a promotion because they are better qualified, rather than be miserable because you're telling yourself that person is 'better than you', go and get that qualification yourself. Confident people generally instil confidence in others and (unless they are over-confident, in which case they just pee you off) are nicer people to be around. This means you get positive responses from those around you which in turn boosts your self confidence further. Have a look at the friends/colleagues/acquaintances around you who you consider to be self confident and I bet you they're not necessarily the most successful/attractive/wealthy people you know? They are just people who believe in themselves and have a healthy perspective on life.

Part time job in a bar is a great idea. Especially if its quite a lively one - or try joining an amateur theatre group. I started doing drama when I was 5 and continued until I was 17 doing it at college - and I'm the most confident person I know - mainly coz I was going on stage in front of lots of people at an early age, but also whilst getting older, I learnt that I'm not too bothered about what others think - I like me.
My formula is to believe we are all technically equal, as though we all have different talents etc., we are all equally important as individuals. Most children have no trouble agreeing with this, but then learn reasons people tell them why they may not be as good as others. This is a myth as the belief children have of equality is the reality. Rather than trying to build confidence, if you lose all the reasons why you aren't confident, the confidence will come back automatically.
