Hello all,
My daughter has made a cake for Father's day which we were supposed to have after the special BBQ tonight. Unfortunately my husband has been struck down with one his epic migraines and will be in bed for the rest of the day.

Is it possible to freeze the cake until the dinner is going ahead, probably next Sunday. It's a home made sponge filled with butter icing and jam and covered in ready to roll fondant icing ( and matchmakers for whiskers ).

Thanks for any advice.

Oh dear. Well there's nothing there that would make you ill if you froze it but I have a feeling that it wouldn't be lovely when thawed. Its worth a try, but maybe thaw it on the day before so that if its not successful them she has time to make another one?

Thank you Woofgang. I thought that might be the case. Think I'll have another sponge on standby.

As long as there is something there that she can show off to everybody and get her photo taken with her dad and the cake I think she'll be happy.
Yes-freeze it-it will be fine-I've just taken round a cake I froze a couple of weeks ago for Mum & Dad-I freeze cakes all the time and have had no problems at all.

Thank you also, Mrsspagnoli. Might make another one anyway because we all know there is no such thing as too many cakes : )
Yep it will freeze fine. My hubby got his daughter a novelty decorated cake for her birthday and then didnt get to see her so rang the baker and they said as long as he wrapped it well it would freeze for 3 months.
be fine yinyang, the secret is to wrap it really well so that it doesn't get freezer burn, and the sooner you use it the better............

Thanks for the other answers, Smowball and Welshlbranr,

Cake was wrapped up well and stuck in the freezer on Sunday night - apart from the matchmaker whiskers - I ate them : ) . I'll bring it out again on Saturday and see how it goes.

Now I have covered the important cake issues, I should mention that my husband is on his feet again.
If it's only for a week, I'd put it in an airtight container and keep it in a cool place - but I hope it's OK when you defrost it!
