Our big old boy, 15yrs, not been well for some time. Swollen face tonight so we took him to the vet. Mouth ulcerated and now weighs 2.5kg (was 6.2). 'Easy' decision - but he was such a lovely boy.
Went so peacefully in my arms, so why can't I stop crying.

As you can see jakep, the AB is chock full of pet lovers who understand and send out their love and sympathy. Whenever you start to love someone, or something, there is pain at the end of it. That is what you accept when you begin a relationship with a pet, but it doesn't make the parting one tiny bit easier. Loving your pet properly is about knowing when it is time to...

Had to do this with my old cat last year, heartbreaking, but keeping him going would have been cruel.

I really do understand why people stop having pets because of their short life span and the upset at the loss, but we are still young and we now have a chihuahua and will be collecting a lovely kitten at the weekend.

jakep, thoughts are with you, it's never easy, been there a few times now, I'm a big butch bloke, still bawled my eyes out last time it happened (2004)
and will do so again no-doubt. Think of it as a last act of love, and the fact that he didn't suffer, it was the right thing to do.
Been there so many times over the years, each time I say I will never have another pet, it hurts too much when this has to be done, but of course I get another one. Did anyone watch Animal Heroes last night when they put the beautiful German Shepherd to sleep, even the handler was sobbing her heart out. Grief is the price you pay for love.
I must correct myself.

I hold it true, whate'er befall;
I feel it, when I sorrow most;
'Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all.

It wasn't a song, but from a poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

I would like to thank every one of you that has taken the time to send thoughts, hugs and shared experiences.
Now that first awful day has passed and I truly know he has gone, I am consoled by the thought that we did absolutely the right thing for Ferdie.
We shared his life for over ten years and it was a pleasure. He really was a very nice cat. X
So sorry for you, just remember the good times xx
I lost my lovely cat in the early 80's and still think of her often.

She was a petite, gorgeous much loved cat and have never replaced her, as it hurt too much to have loved and lost. Sorry for your loss jakep x

My sympathy is with you. I went through the same thing when my Yorkie, Alfie died on June 10th 2004. He was run over at 08:30 and I cried buckets and buckets until 13:00. I then went out and got another Yorkie puppy called Willy and came home with him at 18:00 that same day 1

I was determined that I wasn't going upstairs that night without a Yorkie on the bed, and replacing him quickly was the only thing I could do to lessen the pain. Its now 9 years ago and Willy and I say hello to Alfies photo on my fridge every morning with out fail. I will never forget Alfie as he was my first dog but when you are running around after your new puppy, with a bottle of Dettol and a damp rag, you soon start to feel better.
