Nice puzzle, packed with thematic material. It was made a little easier since all 4 "crowning glories" use the same cluing device. Against all odds I found the highlighting, but I was (am) frustrated by only finding 14 of the 16 letters needed for the 2 words under the grid. Not necessary to go back and find them, but it seems like knowing the letters needed it would be easier!

Tornadoes to the north and south of us Friday night but we got by with heavy rain and about 5 minutes of hail. Many trees down, roofs lifted off about 20 minutes north of us. Will be happy to see July.

Hello Dr b,

I have 15 of the sixteen letters and I'm still unable to find the two words. I agree it's very frustrating but I'll struggle on. That last letter is very elusive.

Fingers crossed good weather is on its way for you soon.
Hi Twit-Who
If you Google the event you will find 41 starred and an explanation for the star. That should help you complete the two word phrase. Even if you Google 41 across it should lead you in the right direction.
Novalis - can you confirm it is the first letters of the clues and not the entries - I ask because they seem to offer more possibilities. Thanks
It is the first letters of the clues.
I do now have the two words (I think) though still only identified 14 of the letters. The hunt continues.
Thanks Novalis,
I had one of my 15 letters wrong as I had inadvertently used the replacement letter instead of the initial letter of the clue - doh! However even though I now have the 16th letter clue I cannot see a "wrong note". Obviously others are having trouble too.
Good Morning! Here's hoping the tornado season doesn't decide to extend itself drb, it's all so ramdom you must dread this time of year.
Finished the grid quickly as the unclued are among my favourites (37/19 having featured in last week's choir trip to the W Midlands) but I'll be blowed if I can decide what 2 words are needed or see what needs high-lighting. Usual problem of never being able to decide which clues need the letters changing.... tone-deaf I suppose!
Hi Devadolly!

We normally see a translation of what needs highlighting.
Thank you novalis, as soon as I saw your post it leapt out at me. Still haven't got to grips with the two words to be written below, know 41a well and have the when/why/by who/for whom but can't decide which two words of the available selection are required! Back to grid-gazing.
Well, I've looked and looked and looked some more but I can't find a wrong note in in 15a (sorry to specify a clue but this is really bugging me). Help! Please don't tell me it should be changed to a plural as is similar in another clue because there's no justification for that - besides which even Chambers shows the singular.

Twit-Who, I am exactly in that position. I can't see anything to do other than change ..man's to ..men's. I guess it is possible to make that change and still have the clue read correctly, which is all the preamble requires.
Mmm.... I think I class that as an unfair clue.... but never mind as on the whole these setters do a great job and give hours of pleasure.
That was the last that I unravelled as well. Only able to because I knew that I was looking for its first letter.

dr b - I think I'll stick with the dull, wet and mildly windy weather of North Western England!! Saw the sun today though.
Hello everyone, bringing up the rear after returning from the Algarve on Monday and first completing EV 1071 (which I found tricky). Have done it now (I think). Found the words that needed highlighting without much difficulty, but as usual struggled with the initial letters. Like others I only found 14 but think I've sussed out the two words. In my case the other two letters seem to both be 'r's, so I hope I'm right!

That just leaves me EV 1072 to tackle, so I'm having a surfeit of EV's this week.
Whoops, somewhat ambiguous comment there. 'Have done it now, I think' refers to the current EV (1073)

Greetings bobbyc, seems like you have been gone for a while. (Hello Christiana too.) The weather gods have atoned by sending us a gorgeous spring week with lows in the 50s and sunny highs in the 70s. I predict it will not last.
