According to naomi's link it's to the heirs of the victim - it was the same for weregeld.

We also have financial victim compensations although not for murder, if you are injured in a crime there are going rates for eyes arms etc.

The difference is we deal with this in a seperate manner in parallel with a criminal investigation.

Although when the responsible party is a corporate that often doesn't happen
There are many totally gross events in some Middle Eastern countries (many of whom are our allies and trading partners) which would not be tolerated in UK. Successive UK governments have turned a blind eye in the interests of oil supplies and lucrative arms sales. Remember the abject apology from our government when our TV did a feature "Death of a Princess" about a Saudi Princess who was beheaded for falling in love with the wrong person?
Bazile, //Is it only me on here that finds that reason astonishing ?//

It sickens me, but it doesn’t surprise me.
It's not sharia, because originally nothing was going to happen. He spent a couple of days in 'prison' (actually somewhere he could come and go and speak and do a TV programme) the mother of the child rang up and objected, there was meltdown on the TV and the next say he said he would pay blood money.
Under Sharia and pre reformation RC law any crime can be excused if you pay enough. That's how the Church became the wealthiest organisation in the world. Their greatest source of income was derived from sin.
The more sin they could invent the richer they became.

The RC still sells indugences but it's not quite so blatant .

I don't know about the concept of "seeming to work". Just because something has gone on unchallenged for a long time doesn't mean it works in any moral sense or even that it benefits the community much. So in this case the rich may be able to buy their way out of responsibility for wrongdoing or lack of care ? I bet that gives them a large incentive to keep the status quo and shrug off any protest about it. It might be a different matter if the meaning was that they paid in blood.
of course we all know there are sharia courts in operation in the UK on the premise they work 'along side' the current British legal system.

thankfully JTG and Ummm have crystal balls and can never see a point in the future where Muslims in the UK have the strength and numbers to oust current law.

I wonder if here and now Sharia is the preferred system amongst our muslim community?
There is an issue. If a community disregards the official legal system and opts exclusively to use their "advice" system, then for them, for all normal intents and purposes, the law in use is the one they accept (whether willingly or otherwise). The risk of a State within a State almost. It's a risky thing to allow, "legal" advice groups that aren't using the country's law to base their advice on.
OG, you're right. Jewish courts operate in Britain on a similar sort of basis - but I think Muslims are far more likely to use their own courts wherever possible, and are far likelier than Jews to consider any ‘ruling’ by their own court to be a ruling of law. Additionally, many Muslims marry here in Islamic ceremonies without going through a civil ceremony, so they aren't officially married in UK law.
they. dont. want. integration.

I'm not one for religion actually i dislike all forms of it but I can tell you this. With the rising atheism and at the same time rapid growth of Islam it could very likely be the most practiced religion in the uk in 20-30 years. To most people it will make no difference but there will be changes good or bad.
People who are old enough to make the choice are leaving Islam in droves – in Africa alone some 6 million leave Islam every year – and in the US it’s estimated that 75% of converts abandon Islam within the first few years. The real reason numbers are increasing is because the birth rate among Muslims is far higher than that of the rest of the population. However, children born in the west are not exposed solely to the Islamic culture, as their parents were, and it may well be that they will eventually reject the old ways in favour of a more uninhibited way of life. Perhaps, for them, the choice between freedom and oppression will not be such a difficult one.

Incidentally, have you noticed how many notorious Islamic extremists are converts? This is interesting.

The fervour of the convert can be a dangerous thing.
It is common in Saudi, a rich person can literally 'get away with murder' by paying blood money. There was the case of a Saudi prince a year or so back, he murdered a servant but just paid 'blood money'.
Women who are raped can be guilty of adultery and put to death, it is considered the woman's fault that she was raped as she either provoked or consented to the attack.
