why do we call pied wagtails "penny wagtails"

There's also Black and White Wagtail, Dish Washer, Nappy Wagtail, Nanny Washtail, Peggy Wash Dish, Quaketail, Wangtail, Water Wagtail, White Wagtail, Willie Wagtail, Winter Wagtail, to name but a few. If you listen to some parts of their song, you might hear the bird saying some of those descriptive names. (But you'll need a large amount of imagination!)

thats lovely Heathfield, it obviously depends on where you live what they are called, I listened to several of the songs and the blackbird for one makes quite a different song to here, regional accents i suppose.
