If a prospective employer asks how much you would expect for a role how do you know what a reasonable sum is? Is there somewhere on the net I can find an average salary for certain jobs in a particular area? I have no idea how much to expect as I have never worked in a similar role before. Any help much appreciated, the job is a PA for a smallish company in London.

I put the details in for my job and it came up with what I would say were realistic figures. On the downside it did produce a pretty wide range, but it will probably help as a starting point.

A good answer for this would be to say -

"A salary that reflect my experience and qualifications"

This can help get you out of awkward situations!

A couple of grand more than you are presently earning is a good starting point. The employer will soon tell you if that's outside their own thinking, but then why would you want to change jobs and get paid less.

I do appreciate, before anyone responds, that people do downsize!

Yes, you can do so through Payscale.com.
