I recently bought a DVD from amazon marketplace (not amazon itself) and when i received it, it was damaged and unwatchable.



The seller has refunded me and is requesting it back. Obviously there is no reason for me to keep it as it is damaged, but am I obliged to return it? I dont see why I should be out of pocket for the return postage.

Can't you claim the cost of postage back from the seller? They have already been good enough to refund you money when at the end of the day, all they have is your word that it is damaged.


I bet there are loads of people out there that claim a refund for a faulty product and then keep the item, which is actually in perfect condition. I'm not suggesting for a second that you are one of these people but the seller didn't have to refund you until they received the DVD back, they have and so I think you should show the same courtesy by returning the item.

But they shouldnt have sold an obviously faulty item in the first place. Had they checked it they would have seen the fault and then they wouldnt just have had my word for it

If I get a faulty item through the post, I contact the the seller, (which you obviously have done), if its a company, I request a prepaid sticker, you are right not to want to pay postage to return something that was damaged when they sent it to you, but they are right to want it back, its the only way they have to tell if your telling the truth.

im with sammy.the seller has refunded you which he/she didnt have to do until you had returned the item and now they,quite reasonably want it back(hopefully not to try and sell again!).
Would it work if you sent it back, but don't put any stamps on?

you can put no stamps on - it will arrive and they will charge the recipient plus �1 for insufficient postage charges.


you could also remove the box and just send the disc and sleeve in an ordinary envelope - it'll weigh next to nothing and won't matter if its not safe as its already broken.

If the seller has a returns policy you should get your postage refunded. If he/she is a "one off" seller with no returns policy and insurance wasn't offered, or paid for by you, then you have done well to get your refund for the item.


I'm unsure about Amazon Marketplace re:buyer/seller feedback. however if I had made this purchase on ebay I would weigh up the pros & cons of "kicking up a stink" over a couple of quid to protect my positive feedback.

This is a no win situation really. You are lucky to be offered a refund as many DVD's only refuse to work even with scratches on certain players. Just a first class stamp in a plain envelope is all it costs to keep good will.


As an Amazon market place seller I can add that the person selling cannot refund over the cost of the initial purchase price and therefore there is no way for them to reimburse you for extra postage that way.

The seller seems to have shown faith by refunding you the money, I know there have been a few CD's/DVD's that worked fine on my PC/DVD player but people have said they didn't work when they received them. Personally I took them on trust and just refunded the money and told them to keep the it.

I'd simply suggest saying to the seller that it doesn't work and therefore would be pointless sending it back, if they still want it back suggest the send an addressed and stamped envelope.

Thanks to all those who answered. I emailed amazon and they say that the seller should send postage as they were the ones at fault, and that once I receive this I should return the film
