Can someone please help me with this riddle:

This thing all things devour
Birds, beast, trees, flowers
Gnaws iron, bites steel
Grinds hard stones to meal
Slays king, ruins town
And beats high mountain down.

I thought "water" might be the answer.

All living things "drink" it.
It corrodes iron and steel, wears down stone and erodes mountains.
The only bit I can't fathom is "slays kings"
