Today he is to give a major speech saying immigrants can be a drain on our society taking up social housing and jobs from the resident population. Is he taking a 180deg turn on this as I cannot remember him being so anti-immigrant before? What has caused his change of views?

It would be very interesting to know how many on here thought that this Coalition was going to work wonders when they voted ? I wonder if you thought your living standards was going to improve?

/// We could of told this country in 50 & 60 that this is going to happen with out controlled immigration ///

Yes, way back then in my own town, some of the indigenous population showed open concern with the high proportion of Caribbean and Asians immigrants that were taking over their areas.

This genuine concern was construed as being racist, yet more recently these same Caribbean and Asian residents, showed similar concern when high numbers of Eastern European immigrants moved into their areas.

This type of concern is not being racist, but to some it seems that it is when the indigenous population are the one's who voice their concerns.
Peter Hitchens (Mail on Sunday) is definitely correct he is (D.C.) Mr. Slippery. The only trouble is what is the alternative? The two ED's are certainly not the answer.

/// Since 1980, Merton’s minority population has risen from 10 per cent to over 50 per cent today. Its primary schools — which were still majority white as recently as 2003 — are now 64 per cent ethnic minority. The area has become, in the jargon, ‘super diverse’. ///

Enough already. No more immigrants. What will our Country be like in 20 years? I dread to think.
It is simply a reaction to UKIP, from all three mainstream parties.

Finally (through the ballot box) they have been kicked up the jacksie and are now worried.

The real problem was Blair and his great multicultural experiment that has damaged this country beyond repair. He and his ilk slurred the rest of us as racists because we didnt like his personal views.

We need immigration to survive, it is what makes a country great. But it must be fair and controlled. Don't expect Cameron to actually do anything since whilst we are members of the EU and subscribe to the ECHR (Mr and Mrs Blairs pension plan) we have our hands tied behind our backs.
The current popularity of UKip has definitely figured in his calculations, together with the pressure from many of his own backbenchers.

Not so much a 180 degree turn as a kind of crablike shift to the right.....

Its obvious why Cameron is playing the immigration card...he has UKIP breathing down his neck.

UKIP might be as mad as a box of frogs but they have put the wind up the old Etonians like nothing else has done since the Head Boy with his cane. Swish swish !

You can always tell when the Tories are getting worried...they start talking about immigrants, and they start to blame the BBC ! ( Ghastly leftie organisation...having a go at poor Boris ! )

They are now getting deeply unpopular, being at least 11 or 12 points behind in all the polls. They have two years left in an increasingly ill-tempered so-called coalition, a marriage of convenience that was never on a very strong footing in the first place. What on earth the Libs and the Tories thought they had in common is beyond me. They hate each other even more than they hate the Labour party !

We face a possibly laughable situation at some date previous to May 2015, when they have to stop attacking the Labour party and start to attack each other again.

The economy is not in very good shape, which, to be fair, is not all down to their policies, any more than Labour was to blame for all the ills before the 2010 election. But the British have shown time and time again that they have relatively short memories, at least when it comes to politics.

They have excellent powers of recall of course when it comes to issues like the dreadful Germans and the 1966 World Cup. We all feel its OK to laugh at the Germans sketch in Fawlty Towers don't we ? No sense of any amnesia there it would seem.

I think that the run down to the next election in 2015 has already begun. Some people have said it started on the morning of the 7th May 2010.

Hang on because its going to be a bumpy ride !
Anotheroldgit...not sure what you are implying when you post a picture of a place of worship, with a red double-decker bus in front ?

Surely you are not saying that people should be deprived of the facility of worshipping in a building of their choice are you ?

I am sure I could find a photo on the Internet somewhere, with a horrid old Toyota or Honda parked in front of a lovely old parish church, if I looked hard enough. Might not be in the Daily Mail though, as having to research in that papers archive would what our American cousins might describe as a Cruel and Unusual Punishment !
Immigrants make up a very small proportion of the current population. Without doubt some of them may be doing what has been suggested by some posters on this forum. ie lazing around and not working. I have no idea and its unlikely I will find out by reading the Daily Mail.

But we have had a situation for years and years here with white, Anglo-Saxon people doing just what you outline. Why is this not an issue ?

There are exceptions of course but most immigrants move to another country for work. They always have, since time began I would guess. For instance, millions of people fled Europe to go to America and Canada from the late 1700's onwards. There are now more people of Scots-Irish descent in North America than they are in Britain. They were amongst the main protagonists in the Manifest Destiny that populated the Mid West and Cailfornia, making America into the nation it is today. Millions of them went West in covered wagons.

We have a very large Amazon Depot in my home town here in South Wales. It is staffed, almost completely by east Europeans. But the dole queues outside the Job Centres in the surrounding area are overflowing with nice healthy white Welsh people, who can't find a job apparently.

Immigrants have come to Britain to work, most of them at least. If there wasn't job vacancies for them to take, they wouldn't be here !

Why were there job vacancies for them to take in the first place, when we have such huge numbers of unemployed Brits ? Surely those vacancies should have been hoovered up by all those people that have been on the dole for years, some of them second and now third generation "unwaged" long before the likes of the Poles arrived ?

Have you visited anyone in hospital recently ? The NHS would collapse, overnight, if all the immigrants went home !

Most of our people on the dole have claimed every benefit going, while supposedly "looking for work" There is a white, British woman in Tewkesbury that was in the news recently, with 11 children. She is claiming £154.30 A WEEK in Child Benefit alone ! I know some people who don't earn that much a week.

About two or three years ago, the BBC ran a documentary on why Brits are out of work, while new arrivals from East Europe have no trouble finding work. It was filmed in Lincolnshire or Norfolk as I recall. The Brits that featured in the program were truly pathetic and embarrassing. There was a young chap who was offered a job in an Indian restaurant, as a waiter by the owner who was persuaded by the BBC to take part in the experiment. He didn't last two days, but even when the owner had to sack him, he still gave him a really nice curry lunch before he went. The owner seemed very nice and didn't freak out as another employer might have done. I thought he was very patient and understanding.

Another couple of men were employed in a vegetable farm, picking asparagus as I recall. They lasted a few days but eventually were "let go" and the owner had to get one of his Polish staff to go back over the area of the field where they worked, in order to pick up all the stuff that the Brits missed.

There was another couple who worked in a veg packing factory, who performed with similar lack of ability.

All the employers that took part in the program made the same point...if they could get willing, hard-working Brits to do the jobs they would, but generally found them to be lazy, and almost useless, thus explaining why they used eastern European labour instead.

I have every sympathy with people who are out of work, and I appreciate that unemployment is rising, especially among the young. I have been unemployed myself, although thankfully not for very long before I found a new job. But if people like the Poles can uproot their families and find work over here, why can't the Brits find work ?

AOG, that mosque in Merton has been there for 10 years. Strange that it took the DM so long to discover it's existence.

For what it's worth, Merton has always been mixed - Wimbledon tends to be on the "posh" side, Morden much more working class (there is a social housing estate there which, when it was built in the 1930s, was the largest social housing project in Europe). And Morden, which is where at least part of the focus of that article is, has never been what anyone could describe as a vibrant shopping center.

Certainly there is a large population of non-whites in the borough, but so what ? Go to any part of the country where there is a large immigrant population and you could find people who will happily express their opinion that all the trouble is down to the immigrants. You will also find plenty of people who have no problem with immigrants, but those aren't the ones who get quoted in the DM.
