Yup, it's a funny old world right enough.
He and his family has been treated appallingly by the military.
Oh yes this is the guy who 'forgot' he was bringing in an illegal firearm.

A 'souvenir'

I can believe a pistol is a souvenir albeit an illegal one

I have difficulty believing the associated 300 rounds of ammunition is a souvenir!

I think it's much more probable that this man is a member of an elite regiment who's had his army career being told he was special and he thought the rules were for the 'little people' that he was SAS and above such petty bureaucracy

Much as I hate to jump to judgement I suspect Hubris

On a practical note his defence is he suffered permanent brain injury and couldn't remember - yet he's clearly been evaluated as fit to stand trial.

Let's see what the expert witnesses have to say

That is presuming we have a jury with double digit IQs now
all the while the taxpayer is keeping Qatada and his brood, great.
I am presuming that his supporters here don't think we should have a special piece of legislation saying it's OK for brain damaged ex members of the SAS to keep pistols and live ammunition at home?

And you just think he should be automatically be given the benefit of the doubt simply because he's a soldier.

Amazing how all these tough men who are taken in taught to be hard and kill people -go out and kill people and then come home and are similarly violent

Oh but it's all post traumatic stress disorder - not their fault right?

Yet the moment a civillian claims to be not fit mentally you're all over accusing them of making it up to get off

Seems only soldiers can have PTSD?
no, i had ptsd, does that count.
baz, I know you meant well but you've given jake one of his favourite titbits, a good chance to bash the military. I too wish we could get the mad mullah out, it seems our greatest enemy however is our own judiciary.
Have you ever scrolled through the answers and recognised an avatar with a long bit of writing after it and thought..Nah, its likely to be b0110x I won't read it?
He should be prosecuted the same as anybody, he knows the laws in this country better than most, I certainly know the laws regarding firearms, it was a ridiculous thing to do!
He's getting aid for his medical condition, and as we all know people (specially working class) who are on benefits are scroungers according to our present Government. Getting him a dishonourable discharge will remove this entitlement - another "cuts" success for milti-millionaire Osborne.

yup...and people like jake-the-peg
"Much as I hate to jump to judgement ". Aye, right then.
and Qatada is hardly innocent of thinking he's above reproach - maybe they have more in common than we thought.
What a waste of money, Mr Nightingale, has already been sentenced, which was further reduced to a 12-month suspended sentence and a re-trial is very unlikely to impose any higher sentence IF they win. The military have classed him unfit for duty.
