Before spending loads of cash on a steam cleaner, try using "vanish" spray for carpets and upholstery. I spilt 3 bottles of red wine on my cream carpet, and this got the stain out! Needed several applications, though.

If you do go for a steam cleaner, they sell one in bandq, can't remember the brand, but it can be used for steam stripping etc, and is not too expensive.

Try your local hire shop, and ask for their advice before you commit yourself - they should know what they are talking about!
I have a large Polti steam cleaner (quite expensive) and a small hand held one. Neither of them seems to get stains out of carpets. I use them in the kitchen and bathroom mainly to blast off limescale and clean the tiled floor etc. Perhaps one of those Bissell machines I have seen on TV that pushes water with a cleaning agent in it into the carpet and then sucks it out. I have no experience of these. Maybe someone else does.
Hi, The best Carpet cleaner/Vacum you can get for domestic use would be an expensive KIRBY.
I have cream carpets too.... and I bought the Bissell Pro-heat..its absolutely brilliant I do them regularly now
