After enjoying my smugness at owning a Miele washing machine, I have been given a royal kick up the arse.

On thursday we had a drain fault, a man came and said the waste pipe was blocked, he cleared it and charged £55 and went on his merry way, after he left I did an express wash, all seemed well. Yesterday I put on a full wash, after 20 minutes the drain fault indicator screamed again, we cleaned the pipes with viakal, flushed them through and put it back on. I thought I'd give the machine a blast with a 90 degree wash with some soda crystals, the cycle started, no water was pulled an and after 2-3 minutes smoke started coming out of the soap powder draw along with a burning smell.

Is my poor machine dead do you think? :(

Is it still under warranty?

No, it's about 8 years old :( What an agg!
Were did you buy it from? I bought mine from John Lewis and it had a 10 year guarantee.
The standard Miele warranty is 2 years but Miele themselves often provide free promotional 5 year warrantees and it is also possible to upgrade this to 10 years at an addditional cost. Sometimes Miele themselves upgrade to 10 years total for free, OR retailers like John Lewis pay Miele for the upgrade from their profit margin so that they can appear to offer the 10 year warranty.

So spudqueen, that is how JL do this.

It sounds dead to me, and requires a service agent. Probably worth doing, but just one of those unfortunate things. I'm still a fan of Miele and our machine has been running for 6 years no trouble so far. It had a 5 years Miele warranty.

Thanks all, I can't remember where I bought it. Funnily enough we had to have the cooker fixed last year and the chap that came saw the washing machine and said "we never, ever get a call out for these". I must be unlucky.

I feel I should call the chap back that came last week, he obviously took the easy option of blocked pipes when the problem was far more technical, but the problem is whether he'll be able to fix the thing or not.

I 'll have to have a think, I don't want to throw good money after bad though.

Thanks again, especially Buildersmate, I'll check that link, OH thinks we should still complain to Miele as the machine should last longer than 8 years given the cost of it.
Our Miele came with the free promotional 10 year warranty- Miele say that their machines are engineered for a 20 year life. So eight years sounds rather poor. Perhaps they would argue that "outside factors" caused the problem?

Well, the man came again this morning to have a look at the machine, he pulled out a tube which was full of sludge and limescale, he gave it a good clean out and now it's back to normal, thank God, He never charged me any more money as he said he should have picked the fault up last time, his number will go into my contacts and I'll use him again. Happy days!
That was lucky!
In my experience 8 years is good for a washing machine these days.

(mind you we have very hard water, and do a lot of washing)

Usually I'd agree Hopkirk but I paid a good few quid for this machine because it should last a lot longer, no matter anyway, it's all ticketyboo (for now!)
