My son has been driving for less than a year and has managed to get himself a speeding ticket. Will he be eligable for the speed awareness course having only passed his test less than a year ago?
Many thanks in advance

I think it depends on how far over the limit he was travelling.
At worst here he will get 3 points and £60 fine.

If he gets more than 6 points in his first two years he will lose his license and will have to re take driving test.
You haven't said what speed he was travelling at or what limit he was in.
There's a calculator here that can suggest the likely outcome according to those parameters.

You have to be offered it. I was doing 37 in a 30 and got offered so took it. Depends on the constabulary and the limits. Only for those doing not much over the limit. I seem to remember I had to pay 90 quid but it avoids the points.

I am ashamed to say he was doing 40 in a 30 zone on the letter it says you can attend up to 42mph. I know they can only get 6 points in the first two years instead of 12 so thats why I was wondering if the rules were diferent for new young drivers being offered the speed awareness course. The letter is addressed to me as I own the car and my son is a second driver. I use it to commute to work and he uses it sometimes in the evening, so when I inform them it was my son driving just wondered if he may be offered the course.
Apparently it depends where you live. Where did the incident occur?
