As some one who has just bought a new computer (Windows 8) I keep receiving e-mails from Microsoft to download Skype.I don't use messenger so is there any point in downloading Skype

I don't have a home phone line so use Skype to make free/cheap telephone calls.
I also use it as an instant messenger to 'type talk' to friends and for video chatting with family.

If you don't want to do any of those things, don't download it

I couldn't live without my Skype. Use it for business and personal phone calls to and from landlines, mobiles, and (of course) other people who have Skype. It can also send SMS messages.

But, as hc says, if you don't feel that you need it, then don't get it.
