Toyota Hilux Engine Number

I've been looking at buying a Toyota Hilux. It has been fitted with the 3litre engine from a Toyota Fourrunner. I want to check the engine number on this engine before I buy the vehicle, just to be sure it is legal(you never know do you?). I have not spent long looking as it's not my vehicle but does anyone know where I can find it without being obvious and upsetting the seller?

Why are you worried about upsetting the seller... they have a lot less to lose than you.

The number will be on the block somewhere... but as there are at least 20 different engines you could be talking about.... it's little hard to give a definitive answer.

It's because he may not have registered the engine change with Swansea. He is in the Forces in Afghanistan and has left the vehicle with his old man to sell. I just thought I could check it against the Log book if I knew where to look for it.
