Down to last clue 42/44a In dire difficulties without the means to save oneself 2,4,5,7,1,6.
I've got...Up ?h?t creek without a paddle. The obvious phrase is up sh*t creek without a paddle, but I can't believe that the local hospice shop, run by elderly ladies from the church would put this in their crossword, they never have done before. Has anybody got any ideas please? X

Thanks Vakayu, but it wouldn't fit. I have everything else in the crossword, and I have ?P ?H?T C?E?K ?I?H?U? A ?A?D?E. OH sugessted up THAT creek, but surely you would say up THE creek, not that . X
It can't be anything other than s*it! Shame on those elderly ladies!
Sorry sparkles62 I can't think of anything else it could be other than what you thought originally but it does seem unlikely usage of phrase in the context you mention!

Thanks everybody, I think I'll fill it in and send it back. Just not like them at all. Maybe they,ve over dosed on the Christmas sherry. X
Good luck with that Sparkles, just because you are elderly doesn't mean you don't use such phrases!
