39 years old Terry Wallis has just regained conciousness after 19 years in a coma since a car crash in 1984. He has seen his 19 years old daughter for the first time. A heartwarming story. I presume that people have recovered from longer comas. Anyone have any examples ?

I don't but I couldn't help thinking when I read that story about all the people who have chosen to turn the life support machines off for their relatives. Although I would imagine that the chances of this recovery happening are unbelieveably remote you would certainly be going through the "what ifs" .

People have recovered from longer comas indeed. A woman called Annie Shapiro was in a coma for over 30 years and woke up. I think she was one of the people that the film 'Reawakenings' was based on.
That was "awakenings" and was not about coma victims but about a brain disease called encephalitis which caused the motor parts of the brain to "go to sleep" i.e. the person became a living statue
