I am reading my third story by Sjowall and Wahloo featuring Martin Beck. Throughout the books the hero is referred to as "Martin Beck" rather than by surname or first name only as is normally the case. I find this pactice increasingly irritating. Does it bother anyone else or am I just pernickity?

Were you listening to Foreign Bodies on Radio 4 at lunchtime? There was a discussion about Scandanavian crime novels and their popularity. I've just downloaded Book 1 to read over the weekend.
To address your question, I've noticed this in other books, can't think offhand of which, but it is a bit of an irritation!
