ford galaxy 2003 intermittent speedo and fuel gauge fault

Hi,

Forld galaxy 2003 1.9 tdi Ghia diesel. Speedo stops registering and fuel warning comes on (with plenty fuel in the tank). Been told I need to replace the dashboard but seems rather excessive. Can anyone advise what or where I can check for a loose connection before I spend unnecessarily?
