Presumably it has got the bluetooth package fitted to the car (don't assume just because it's got the controls on the steering wheel it does have it fitted, they are on all of them)

My old samsung used to connect with no problem but this one wont
There might be a software update needed for the car to see the newer technology.

Any ideas where i would look for an update please
Your phone is switched to bluetooth! sorry if that is a silly statement.
Have you gone though the idrive menu to make sure bluetooth is activated? Had a quick google it seems some people have connection problems after the battery has been removed or been disconnected, have you done that lately. Also have you deleted the old phone from the car menu, some opinions as to the idrive not liking multiple users.
Had that with mine, not easy to delete old phone imo.
If it's needed it would most likely be a dealer job Alan.
Certainly try what others have said first though.
I do remember an issue with phonebook data transfer with Samsung phones before where you had to go into your settings menu and "mark all" the first time and it was automatic after that. I'd like to think that that inconvenience had been sorted by now though.
Is it anything to do with the account settings? In phonebook under Activities, Accounts, there`s an auto-sync button. Could it be that?
