My wife has just bought a deodorant which claims "invisible white marks". If they are invisible, how do we know that they are white???

Having googled it, I can't find any deodorant that makes such a claim. Perhaps you could tell us the brand?
It ought to say "doesn't leave any white marks" which some deodorants to. That's daft.
Most deodorants leave white marks on garments woofas.
