I'm putting this question here rather then destinations, hoping it'll get seen more here.

me and the oh don't like big shopping centres so they're a no no

There are a coupl of big chinese supermarkets. Wing yip amd camt remem the name of the other one. From memory the market by the bull ring is pretty good. I think you ned rowan or caz tho.

Hoe you are well :-)
sparkhill and handswoirth are asian neighborhoods 95 per cent asian shops very interesting area to visit even if your not asian but there not near egbaston
handsworth that should read
Edgbaston's a huge area, I used to live there - Rotton Park in the north (next to Smethwick) would have some suitable shops, whereas in the south of the area (near Sparkhill, Sparkbrook and Moseley) you'll soon find the Balti triangle with loads of shops. Bus service is good, it'll take your son most places.
The Ladypool road (the balti belt) is not far from edgbaston,

There are quite a lot of indian shops in birmingham, however you will have to travel north of edgbaston to the soho road in handsworth, or east to alum rock and sparkhill, you can also try the markets in birmingham city centre
moseley is supposed to have some great indian resturants as well and is a not far from the cricket ground
