I think this is the biggest problem facing the world today.
But no one organization has the power to stop it.
And each individual country wants to increase its population to provide more workers, and more people paying taxes.
And in fact the "open door" immigration policy this country has had for a few years could well come back and bite us in the b*m as many of these immigrants breed far quicker than the indiginous population, driving up our popualation even quicker.
We may well come to regret it in the future (many of us do already).
Going round the centre of Birmingham yesterday was like being in a mixture of Pakistan and Iraq.

It is impossible to impose family planning measures on the global population. It has be voluntary, and that means education.
The implementation of the one child per family rule in China has had serious costs for the population - criminalisation, financial penalties,employment termination. It has also led to sex selective abortions, and also to a likely decline in the population, with huge implications for the economy and pensions, tax revenues etc.In India, they tried a sterilisation programme, which had little success. There is clear evidence to show that increasing education and increasing economic wealth are the best controllers of population growth.
As to whether we can feed everyone -I think there have been estimations that, agriculturally speaking, the globe could sustain a significant increase in populations - the Malthusian apocyphal vision is not quite upon us - but there does need to be significant changes in diet, especially in the developed world, if that is to be the case.
And countries do need immigration. The flow of humans around the globe is important, but it will inevitably cause cultural tensions, when indigent populations feel under threat from the immigration.

Yes VHG has a point the problem in the UK is the fact that we are seeing an ever increasing population, due entirely from subsequent government's mass immigration policies.
That along with World food shortages due to adverse weather conditions, ie floods and droughts etc, we are already seeing an increase in food prices due to these reasons, there could come a time when rationing of a kind not seen since the 50s may have to be introduced.
Regarding the rest of the world's population growth problems, Africa in particular, this isn't helped by wealthier countries intervention in preventing infantile mortalities.

One of the reasons why people have a larger number of children than in the West is because they know that some will die, and on a very basic level - many rely on their children to look after them in old age.
This is something the Pope should consider when he (regularly) chastises the efforts to distribute and teach birth control methods in Africa.

Well nature would sort it out, but we interfere. As SP points out high child rates are because many die, as they did in the UK 100 yrs ago, but we go interfereing and feed them meaning there will be even more to feed.
Instead of just feeding we should be educating about contraception. But that, of course, is not trendy with the Islington set.

Its not just the population thing...its also the spread of age groups across the spectrum. Basically its the young that contribute and the old that consume resources. In future every old person living will have to be supported by two younger people.
The solution speaks for itself. Encourage more younger births and put DNR orders for everyone over 65 who has to be treated in hospital.

Also natural selection among the human population has been eradicated due to the advances in medicine. Where as at one time people died due to disease and disabilities, now they are cured and kept alive. Is this a good thing? Maybe on an emotional level it is but thinking about it logically, it probably isn't.
Natural selection in humans has not been eradicated. It is still happening, although you may be able to argue that the process has been slowed.
