17d Applies grease - difficult, over wide square (7)
I also got TALLOWS but was a bit disappointed that to get the OWS the author just took the first letter of the three words, over wide and square. Are O for over and W for wide and S for square standard abbreviations? Am I wrong in thinking it's a poor clue?
