Just when I thought I'd heard it all; my bro & SIL went to a parents evening last night, during which they were told that the words 'Home Work' were no longer going to be used it was now going to be called 'Home Learning', they were told the reason being kids these days are scared of the word 'work' and its very off-putting to them. So to make it easier for the kids and push them forward they are now calling it 'Home Learning'! Apparantly this is going to be a national thing, not just for this school. They have got to be kidding us??!! Why are they pussy-footing around... it's bloody WORK and the sooner the kids get to know about real life the better. Everything these days are done so nobody gets hurt or upset by words, oh come on pleeeease! We never had any of this when we were kids and we turned out ok.

Ok Ok, lets go with this, so I'm no longer going early to work ... from now on I'm going to EARLY LEARNING .. Lol :)

"Right, tonight, we are going to have our one Home Learning Session of the week. I know that you are all sixteen but I have to give your some parental leadership and navigation as it is now called, not just bloody well tell you to do your homework.

Oh I guess, you will report me to the EverythingisEqualandPoliticallyCorrect team for being naughty. Joanie and Davie, as close and special friends of Martin and Moira, in this house you will find we have some uncensored fun around the dining table, when it comes to the Learning Centre terminology and we regularly take the piss out of your Educational Catalytic Manager.

Anyway, I want to see you Martin and Joanie go up to Martin's room and Moira and Davie to Moira's room to start your Intimate Practical to learn about vaginas and penises and what they do. And no, we can't call it Biology or Sex Lessons now, it's called the "Big Bang"

Get to it now, chop chop."

this is quite a minor adjustment - but i always wonder on what basis the people who rear up and complain about simple changes like this, have to support their apparent belief that the old ways are perfect and should never be changed...

the world is not perfect, lots of things dont work and lots of things have had a negative impact on the world - often through thoughtlessness and ignorance, and often starting with how we are brought up - and now when people are realising this and becoming more enlightened in the way the world works and are trying - in small ways - to address these things, people go mad and start berating them claiming PC gone mad ...

what if no-one ever changed anything and everything stayed the same forever ... ?
I just asked my kids if they thought the term Home Learning as opposed to Home Work would make them feel better about doing it....... they looked at me like I had 6 heads.
Maybe it's the way children are taught today. In days of yore, learning by rote was the only way and, it appeared to work quite well. I do recall being taught maths by a teacher who was a wizz at his subject, had written many text books etc.. but he did nothing for me so, I was moved down a stream and there was taught maths by an ex- army education officer who enjoyed the subject. Suffice to say did get a Distincton in my School Certificate exams, something I feel would have been impossible under the previous chap.
well I went to a parents evening last night as well and trust me by year 11 you hear the word "homework" a lot!
Parents evening?? It's still September!!!
it was actually a maths "parents evening" to prep the kids doing gcse's in november
how pathetic.....another example of limp-wristed leftie pc crap!
Schools are ridiculous nowadays.
A night out with your leanermates?
I LOATHE AND DETEST the way these ostensibly "tried and tested" terms are foisted upon schools. I hope there are at least few heads of department who refuse to take it up the pooper and do what they're told by Nanny Government.
Did anybody ever really benefit from doing homework or whatever you want to call it? I never did, mainly because it was done in the corridor minutes before going into the lesson, usually copied from the class swot.
lol lankeela, very true... mostly either the parents do it for them or they cheat on the net or just do a quick pointless effort... because they hate the 'work'

children in general hate schoolwork - i did - i resented spending all day in school 'working' and then having to go home and do even more 'work' - and the perception kids have of it is that its not fun or interesting or learning - its just forced WORK, a set of boring stuff that you must write etc or the teacher will moan.
so if such a minor, easy change as this changes the general perception of homework - from WORK to LEARNING, even in some small way - then wheres the harm?

of course it wont affect anything over night and of course if you ask a kid or anyone that question theyd think it was pointless and daft - because they already have the subconscious perceptions ingrained within them ... but the next generation of kids who know it as nothing but 'home learning' may develop a slightly more positive attitude towards it.

its not a big deal.
At my school it was called 'prep'.
But surely home 'learning' is what it is or ought to be. I'd have thought anything which encourages children to learn at home is a good thing? Having said that I've not heard this news either. Sounds most unlikely to me. Sadly
