My friends 7 year old daughter is mad about cats and im looking for a suitable xmas present. Her mum asked me not to get any cuddly toys as she already has literally hundreds her dad has pleaded with me not to get anything noisy so as she is a keen reader i thought a book would be the ideal compromise , any suggestions ?

Most 7-year-old's like Dick King Smith's books, so 'The Cat Lady' is one possibility.

Michael Morpurgo's books are harder read but a 7-year-old with fairly good reading skills (and a love of cats) might be able to cope with 'The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips'.

Most book shops have staff who pride themselves on their knowledge of their stock so, as long as you avoid the 'Saturday staff', you should be able to get some good advice locally.

'The Cat'

Not strictly a childrens book but has lovely pictures in it..

Another suggestion:

I was browsing in my local Waterstone's today and spotted 'The Cat Who Wanted to Go Home' by Jill Tomlinson.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I ended up getting "Ellie and the cat" by Marjorie Blackman & "The return of the killer cat" by Anne Fine.
