I wonder if someone can put a name to the plant I`m describing.
It starts to come up in early summer with many stems. The stems are brownish/redish colour. They are around one and a half to two feet tall when the flowers start to come out.The leaves are pointed, dark green lighter under neath with vains showing. The flowers when they come out are bright red on the top of the stems. The flowers are like giant lobelias. They last around 2/3 weeks. I think I bought it at Sissinghurst a long time ago.It did have a lable with it but over time it`s got lost. I have a feeling it was called "Lobelia Cardinalis"(?) But I cannnot find it under that name in any gardening book that I have. So what is it can any one help please?

I had that in a previous garden - bought it from a local flower show - and I knew it as lobelia Cardinalis too
If you put Lobelia Cardinalis into google images there are loads of pictures that seem to look like your plant - have you tried?
you could ask in www.realgardeners.co.uk

Many thanks for all your answers.
One of the answers, the "Wikipedia" one, mentions propogation of the plant, but it dosen`t say what is the best time to do it i.e spring, winter, summer or autum. Again can someone help please.
I`ve just moved my one from a small pot,I tried growing it in the ground but I nearly lost it,to a much larger container.
Again many thanks for any answers.
