I need some advice about these tablets. My 19 year old grandson is staying with me at the moment and is taking TRIMETHOPRIM 200mg twice a day for a kidney/urinary infection. He has developed a really bad rash over his body, very itchy and he doesn't feel well. I said to him he should phone his GP for advice, but like all 19 year olds will not do it. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

He is 19, you have given him the correct course of action, its now up to him, if it is just an itchy rash nothing much to worry about in my view.
I see also feeling unwell, he should really consult GP.
It is a side effect, Ratter is right , try appealing to his vanity - say you hope the rash won't leave scars. Good luck.

Thanks for advice. I know it is down to him to see his GP but while he is staying with me I kind of feel responsible for him. Oh dear..19 year old boys :-(
MIGHT be the antibiotic.

For how long has he been taking them........which day are we on?

Sqad, he had been taking them for five days. Rash appeared on the fifth day.Very nasty looking, but all sorted now. Managed to get him to go to his GP.Tablets have been stopped but no others given.Has now to go for a blood test, which is another battle (scared of needles). Think I'm fighting a losing battle here.!!
Thanks for your feedback

Rash is unlikely to be due to the antibiotics, but possibly to the disease process which necessitated the antibiotics.

Glad all is now well.
For how long has your grandson been taking this medication? I've occasionally had it for similar reasons. It used to be prescribed as one tablet twice a day for 3 days (total 6 tablets) which was sufficient for me. Tablets now come in packs of 14, a week's supply, but I still find 2 or 3 days is enough provided I take them at the first signs of discomfort.

He had been taking them for five days. GP has stopped him taking them now, but the rash still there. It flares up then goes, then appears again on different part of his body. Very strange.
