What courses are available, what exactly do they teach you? what are their costs and are they worth it in the sense do they really improve your driving skills and lower your insurance enough to justify doing the course?

The main one is the IAM and that does lowere premiums but really the only way by not claiming and gettig older and more experienced.
You will be surprised at how much your driving will improve by joining the IAM, A lot of drivers who think they are good think the IAM are just a lot of old do gooders but the IAM run track days Skid pans etc.

If all you are looking for is cheaper insurance then don't bother, I have been a member since 1975 and have never found an insurer and that includes the one the IAM reccomend that can get anywhere near the ones I use from confused. com even though I give them the chance to drop their prices a bit.!
I must endorse the previous answers. I have been an IAM member, and an Observer for them for many years. The test is carried out by a Class 1 Advanced Police Driver and if you can satisfy him/her as to your driving skills then you are a very skillful and safe driver (approx. 80% less likely to have an accident). As for insurance I canot help you. Find your local IAM group and either visit them or contact the group secretary.
I am very surprised to hear that. I was told that most motor insurers do a substantial discount for members of the IAM, but I am in error here?

That is the only reason why some people do this voluntary step I am sorry to say.
Sorry, Jonny, can't agree with your last sentence. I took the IAM test because I was interested in safe, progressive, driving - not to get lower insurance.

Cheers.

I said that that was the only reason why SOME people do it not ALL people. It would be very wrong and contraversial of me to tar you all with the same brush. Clearly you are one of the very principled drivers who is actually interested in becoming a safer driver, not just in saving money.

Am I forgiven my incorrect assumptions?
Of course ! And I don't have a problem with the 'some' people to whom you refer taking the IAM test for the reason you prescribe, because they will be better drivers anyway.
