Have you bought a legit battery or a cheap generic?

"give it 24 hours to charge up"
Leave for 24 hours to fully initially charge up :)
Yes but shouldn't the laptop still be able to come on - given that it is plugged into the mains ?

Thank you rojash and boxtops my grand daughter says the same.I'm like you Bazile-thought I'd be able to see a light on or something. One web site said you should be able to see something in corner of screen No chance mine wont even turn on.Think you've got it EcclesCake(my favourite cake)so will send it back in morning and get some one to look at it Many thanks all of you for your time
The laptop should be able to run without any battery.

It may be that the old battery went flat because the power supply has failed and the new one is not being charged either.

Does the light come on in the power supply? Normally you should also see a light somewhere on the laptop to indicate there is power coming from the supply.
Could be as suggested by beso.......No power getting through.

Is your mains socket working? If it is, then it could be that the battery charging Transformer has failed.
