I am looking to buy a used car. Which make of cars are cheaper to repair and replace parts ( want to take it to local garage rather than a specific dealer). Many thanks

thats a very broad question isnt it, not even any clues as to what sort of car youd like.

www.whatcar.co.uk gives ideas on safety, running costs, prices, recalls for most cars.
You are probably best with a Vauxhall or Ford.

Don't touch anything French.
fiat and fords are cheap on parts
Yes but Fiat stands for fix it again tomorrow

nothing italian nothing french. grow up. vauxhall has to be the worst of the bunch. bunch of max power readers in ere
Vauxhall and ford are cheap cars, parts are cheap, servicing is cheap BUT those 2 brands have cost me a lot more to keep on road due to breakdowns than other cars ive owned.

Honda were dearer on parts but i car was cheaper in the long run, plus held its value much better than the others

From the cheap old wrecks I've owned, I'd say the Fiesta is the most reliable and cheapest to fix. Escort comes next. Never owned a Vauxhall, but I believe they're similar. The two Metros I had gave good service - not many left now I think.

I try to avoid foreign cars - they always cost more to insure, though you can get cheap pattern parts for them from specialists.

French cars are weird, but I had a Citron AX which gave no trouble.

Japanese makes can be very reliable until they get old and then everything seems to go wrong at once (according to legend). I had a Datsun once which lasted remarkably well.
get a horse
Get a Punto. Good to drive, cheap to insure and cheap to repair. Had mine 4 yrs now and not failed MOT yet !
