Self-certificating and holidays....

The scenario is this:
a weeks holiday has been booked off from a job (mon-fri) and at a doctor's consultation on the Friday preceding this the worker is instructed to take 3 weeks (min.) away from work.
1. What is the best situation for the worker in approaching the Employer with regards to holiday/SSP?
2. This is time off 'again' after a period of recovery following an operation. The worker probably went back to work too soon (although the Dr had signed a 'Fit to work' certificate requesting light duties). Does this have any impact or bearing upon the present situation?

Many thanks.

depends on their contract/terms and conditions. in my job, i would be able to take the 3 weeks off and not lose 1 week of annual leave. they need to check with hr what the procedure is and inform them and provide a sick note from the doctor to cover that 3 weeks. if they went back too soon, it is better to be honest and say they haven't recovered enough and take the time they need. honesty and informing the employer as soon as possible is the key to maintaining good relations - if they are a solid employee, the company will understand.
