when we get silent or an automated voice on the line, we press the hash key several times, this way it is supposed to confuse their computer system and delete your number.

Our solution is an answerphone, combined with caller display. If no number is shown, or we don't recognise it, we leave it to the answerphone. If they don't, or can't, leave a message we ignore it. Some phones (our Panasonic included) have a facility to add numbers to be blocked, which we have used for a particular series of fake "charity collectors". Some phone service providers, such as Tesco, also provide a blocking facility, at a charge. For both these options, of course, you need to know the number which called you.
I had one of these calls just a few minutes ago.

I was expecting a call from somebody, but I was upstairs when the phone rang.

I hurried down stairs to answer it, and then heard a "click" and a foreign voice said "is that Mr xxxxxx".

I was so annoyed I screamed out "why dont you **** off" and slammed the phone down.
You can join the telephone preference service it's free and stops any companies ringing you unless you have asked them to. It's really easy. Then if anyone does ring you say you are a member of telephone preference service and they hang up as they can be fined!

Not perfect but it should help a lot

i think there should be some kind of law against it or some kind of policing. These kind of phone calls are taking the pleasure out of talking to genuine people on the phone.
Thanks for your replies xxx
The telephone preference service will help but it certainly doesn't get rid of all of them
The TPS is only effective for people calling you from UK based companies.

When they call me I say "Sorry, I'm driving at the moment. Can I call you back later?" After which I put the 'phone down. Another solution is to whistle loudly into the 'phone.
We pay to subscribe to the CPS - £40 a year, but it stops calls from everywhere, not just UK. I've just renewed, we've very pleased with the service.
I also have the telephone preference service, but it doesnt stop all calls at once, as some keep your number, as said above-mention it and they go apologetic or hang up, 95% of mine stopped within month
I use the BT services 'choose to refuse' and can block nuisance numbers but only UK numbers, but it is about £4 a month.

NIBBLE, i read your reply, i can't find out about CPS you mentioned on the net, i would be interested in the service you have as mine doesn't stop international callers, thanks
An Acme Thunderer is a telephone essential.
i am and have been using anon call reject for many years, if they dont show the number it doesnt get through,
Bought at the World Cup in South Africa I now keep my vuvuzela next to the phone!
Are you with Sky? If so, their system cold calls you, when you answer IF there's an operator free they put you through, if not it goes dead or beeps then dies. I had it for weeks here. You can remove your number from their database.
