I have received an email from Google, I have a an email account with them, that someone is trying to access my account and they've advised me to change my password I use for this account.
So my question is, is this spam or a genuine email????

probably not genuine
Contact Google from your account (not the e-mail as it's most likely to be bogus) and ask them.

Thanks, I will do that.
...and DON'T click on anything in the e-mail.
It could be genuine. Google will send an E/mail if it is thought that your account is in danger of being accessed by any unauthorised person.

However, play it safe and do NOT reply direct to the actual E/mail, but do as Answerprancer has advised.

Ron.
I got an email from them saying that somebody in Spain had tried to access my account and suggesting I change my password, which I did. The details they gave were convincing.

A general email saying "someone is trying to access your account" sounds dodgy, though.

Can't hurt to change your password regardless.
I agree with jno- it's a good idea to change your password from time to time
