from arrested persons.

I don't have too much of a problem with that however I draw the line against retaining that data from person who are subsequently not charged.

Are the Police now being given to much power in this field, especially in light of the recently mooted legislation that would allow them access to all emails, text messages etc? Or is it for the benefit of society and crime fighting that this be allowed?

it should not be allowed to keep data on people who are judged innocent. Nor should DNA records kept. I don't understand why the law is treating people as though guilty before proved innocent in some cases.

its one of the tried and tested ways of keeping the population under control by governments , keep them scared of the security forces and you have them under your thumb
Forgot to say, they keep the info on innocent people because its not what you havent done now its what you may do in the future !

Be afraid , very afraid
That goes against the tenet of law in Britain.
I've always presumed they checked it anyway, do they need a warrant at the moment?
We are fast becoming a Police state. Started by Blair and continued by all who have followed him.
I got arrested 2 1/2 years ago and didn't get charged but had my fingerprints and DNA taken. I couldn't really care less that the police still have them, what are they going to do just randomly fit me up?

Who cares if the police have some mobile phone data?
