Most of you know that my teenag son and his gf had their baby early a couple of weeks ago. they live over 120 miles from me, but everynody else lives right by them. they split their time between my ex's house(his dad) and her dads house. My daughter and other son also live in same area.I went up day before baby was born and stayed 2 days. I went up again a week later and stayed overnight and am going to try to go up after work tomorrow. Because baby was 3 wks early she is mostly sleeping - I havent seen her with her eyes open yet.yet whenever I call they say oh she's awake now,she woke up just after you left. or they send me pics of her on to my fone with her eyes open. I feel so sad that they are all seeing her every day and I am hardly seeing her but what with work and the distance it is so difficult. I dont feel the baby will even get to know me and feel that i am missing out, just sad about it..... : ( Didnt think I would feel like this.

the upside of living some distance away is that you're less likely to be taken for granted as a childminder!

But it's only a couple of weeks so far, and they'll be far too busy to try to make much time for grannies. Give them time to sort their lives out and you may be able to fit in more regular visits.
My grand parents (Dads side) lived in a different country to us most of my childhood. Didn't effect how much I loved them. It probably enhanced it as our time together was more precious.
I live 15 minutes or so by foot from my youngest daughter and her children, sometimes I don't see her for a couple of weeks, other times she visits several times a week.
It's very early days, I wouldn't worry too much about her getting to know you yet. Maybe in a month or so you can take a few days off to visit them. Also as the baby gets older and they get more settled as a little family they will be more able to come and visit you. I'm not holding out any hope for grandchildren myself but I do have a great nephew who lives a couple of hours away so I don't see him much. I find Facebook is great for keeping up with day to day news and with digital cameras it seems new parents can never take enough photos.

I guess because of the distance i just dont have the option of popping in to see them for an hour or so whenveri fancy(or they allow). It has to be planned/work juggled etc, which is frustrating.
I've got a few nephews/nieces who live 100 plus miles away so my family down here, including my Dad do miss out on some of the good bits but they do get to know who you are quicker than you think and on the plus side, they are always far more excited about seeing you over the ones they see all the time.
Our grandchildren live 5,000 miles away and we see them every three years or so. It's the way it is.

Guess i should just be grateful that they are all healthy and doing well.
That's not how it works though. I think I'd feel the same as you...
It must be so hard for you right now, but when she is a little bit older I'm sure her parents will be delighted to have some time to themselves and let her come and stay with you xx

I just want to give her a cuddle. When I went up last week couldnt bear to hand her back when i had to go. She is just perfect.
Are you feeling broody?
