..programme just finished on BBC2.

Anyone see it? It was horrific and heartbreaking and went as far as exposing the failings of the Primate of All Ireland, Sean Brady who failed to protect children as far back as 1975 from the abuse of a predatory paedophile priest.

The investigative journalist who made it believes that the scandal of such cases has sounded the death knell for the Catholic church in Ireland.

Is it possible that he could be right?

//I know it from my education & family relations. Trust me, I cant reveal more for privacy reasons.//

Not quite sure what that means, but it certainly isn’t restricted to Ireland.

If you want more, there are plenty of examples available.

Noraq, it’s religion – and that means “do as I say, not as I do.”
Which makes you wonder why they even joined the Church if they dismiss one of the fundamental tenets, the concept of heaven and hell.

Maybe there is a place for having the seventy virgins.............

“…Until about twenty-five years ago, it was very common among ardent Catholic families for at least one son to choose the priesthood….” My uncle is an RC Bishop. He prays for me - so I have a reservation in heaven :)

Naomi, You're wrong. The church is not the whole religion. Catholics do have choices and can practise in a church that suits their lifestyle. Catholics can also engage police & law in criminal acts without the church's interference.
A repugnant, heinous, disgusting criminal act was perpetrated, repeatedly. Despite whatever Brady says, he condoned it. He told the bishop or whatever doesn't cut it. There is no humanity in the man and he should be tried for conspiracy. He knew before and after and did nothing. Now he tries to to excuse his actions

If this was a layman, you wouldn't let him live in your street.

I also think that if you are a catholic and you seek to find excuses for this scum of the earth, then you condone his actions and all he covered up.
Baffled by Tambo again!!
i am in no way defending the catholic church in this matter, but there is abuse in other "religion.
anna no one says there isn't. I have argued long and hard with Muslims about the age of marriage, but just because theres abuse in on the "religion" (your quotes) does it make it right?
Dave, I don't think Anna is saying what you imply - just that the Catholics are not the only ones at it - by no means is she condoning their action.
Ummmm, //Baffled by Tambo again!!//

Me too.

Tamborine, // Naomi, You're wrong. The church is not the whole religion. Catholics do have choices and can practise in a church that suits their lifestyle. Catholics can also engage police & law in criminal acts without the church's interference.//

I don’t know what you mean. I haven’t said anything. All I’ve done is given a couple of links to demonstrate that this problem in not confined to Ireland. Perhaps you’re talking to someone else and used my name by mistake.
Anneasquith - “... i am in no way defending the catholic church in this matter, but there is abuse in other [religions]...”

I agree with you. Other religions (and one religion in particular) also have an appalling and ongoing problem with the practice and the covering up of child sex abuse. However, this thread is specifically about members of the Catholic Church deliberately engaging in deception about such matters.
I've just watched it. Emotive, scandalous and sickening, of course, but that was its obvious intention.

IMO, anything which can help to undermine the appalling and brainwashing stranglehold that Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular have over gullible people can only be a good thing...
You can't call them gullible people Mark. Many of these people were living in remote parts of Ireland....they know nothing else. Or should I say 'knew'? They're copping on now.
I've just watched it too.

The hierarchs of the Catholic Church clearly know no shame. Their actions are and continue to be utterly despicable.
True enough, birdie, but until / unless the Irish population is allowed to have its eyes opened to their perfidy, Catholic priests will continue to practice it.
