windows live messenger display name characters appearing as squares

whenever i use a special character from the character map on my computer as part of my windows live messenger display name, it does not appear as the character, but as a long thin box. Also i have noticed these boxes on other peoples display names. I did not used to have this problem untill i recently restored my computer.

this question is exactly what i am experiencing now, using messenger 2011 and windows seven.. and this problem existed 4 years ago.. who are you, john1991? what have you seen? have you solved your problem?
