I need a lock fitted to a bedroom door and have no idea where to start.

Is it worth trying to do it myself or call someone in to do it for me?

How much is a reasonale price to pay to have someone fit the lock for me?

I don't want to be conned but how do I know if they are charging too much?

Thanks for your help.

Can you not just get one of those lil push across locks that fits onto the door or are you wanting a proper one with a key?

AliFlump it needs to have a key so that it can be locked while I am not in the house and others are.

ok, i would think that the easiest thing to do would be to replace the original door handle with one that has a lock at the bottom it shouldnt be too hard to fit but you might have to cut some out of the door frame to accomodate the lock

on gettting a professional in or not it depends on how confident you are on doing it. do you know anyone whos good at DIY

Why not try asking around friends and workmates? Surely someone knows a nice carpenter who would fit you a Yale type of lock. A good carpenter will do this in under an hour, and Yale locks are not too expensive nowadays. Please don't try it yourself as it only looks simple when it's done by a pro.

Good luck

From 35 labour plus lock, depending on area.

Basic quality 'Yale' type from 15.

Similar but you need to lock it with a key 30, you can't lock yourself out tho'

Nasty key in knob sets 15, but a waste of time for security.

Screw on a padlock, dirt cheap and easy but smart*rse might lock you in. Very dangerous.
