I can only find this painting listed as by Vermeer but the date appears to be wrong

Thanks for the thoughts, albaqwerty! Fortunately, most of the really severe storms that destroyed entire towns and killed lots of people were much farther south...
it's unusual for a Vermeer - as far as I know it's the only one in which the woman stares straight at the viewer. (Others do look at you but are twisting their bodies to do so.) Of course, he may just have decided to do something different for a change; but it does leave the way open for scholars to question its authenticity
