If I were to buy a 1kw wind turbine, then am I right in saying that after one hour it has produced 1Kwh?

And if my electricity costs 6p per unit would my turbine be producing 6p per hr? and if the wind is half as strong would it only produce 3p per hr or does it produce 1kw as soon as it starts to turn?

so if I am right so far how much does one of these big wind turbines in wind farms produce? what are their output and what do they cost to buy?

Alot of questions I know ;-)

They don't say how much a turbine cost,
but they come in all sizes,
from 50kW to 5MW,
There are even some tiny ones that go down to 100W.

On that website you can find data about average wind speed, that should help you calculate how much power you can get. Basically a turbine will be efficient if if's on a hill or offshore.

A 1 kW wind turbine will produce 1kW as maximum power. Each turbine has a power curve which will determine how much power is produce at various speeds. They start producing energy at about 4m/s wind speed and maximum power at about 13 m/s. It is possible to obtain some generic wind data for various regions and use this along with the turbine power curve to determine what you might expect to produce each year. if you are considering small wind turbines a good place to look is : www.provenenergy.co.uk

In terms of large scale turbines and wind farms the latest turbines are now up to 3MW each and are currently being developed for 5MW. The current cost for a wind farm is approx 700-800K/MW installed onshore and 1200K/MW offshore. The energy produced is based on wind reasource for the area, the size of turbine and its power curve. Dispite much critisism a large modern turbine in a well placed spot can deliver significant volumes of energy of a year. Put it this way I wish I could afford and had space for one!
