When looking at paintings of Henry VIII his costumes are clearly elaborate and beautifully made yet quite often he has a piece of random white cloth tied round his waste like a bandage. What is this? It just seems so out of place!

just looks like a belt, but I could be wrong

jno, it could be a belt but it just doesn't fit in with the rest of the outfit. It's as if someone said "what will we do with this spare bit of material?" "ach just tie it round hs waist"
I always assumed it was ribbon to keep his under coat closed
