A hind is a young female deer as opposed to a hart (male).
Hind - can mean 'backward' & is a female red deer

1d Marriage à la mode (by Hogarth) - 'made' (composed, including) 'rr(ights)' + 'i age' (one time) + 'Alamo' (scene of massacre)

Thanks Mike, I do know what a hind is. I just don't understand why it's bacward female.
Apologies, Tilly2 - I should have added that it's always nice to include the full clue, number of letters & any you've placed, so that people without the puzzle can more readily help you - thanks :-))
