Last night I went outside the pub for a cigarette ( additve free before you ask ! ). It was a clear night and there was a good veiw of the night sky desipite the light pollution . Looking up I noticed a bright light moving , at first I thought it was the police helicopter but it was moving too fast and was silent . It moved in sort of gigantic arc and got much brighter as it passed overhead mostly bright white but tinged with green and yellow I also noted distinct red trails alongside the white tail .
I was awestruck ,rooted to the spot .There were two other customers outside onr of whom suggested it was a chinese lantern !
Have checked out this morning and there were many reports of a meteor last night , Feel really priveleged to have seen it ! Anyone else lucky enough ? :)
ps totally forgot about the camera on my phone doh !

I remember one falling in Leicestershire in 1965, its in a museum now ......
Read this report
Barwell and neighbouring Earl Shilton in Leicestershire, were the site of a meteor event when, on Christmas Eve 1965, the villages were showered with fragments, that when combined, were about the size of a traditional Christmas turkey. No one was hurt, although some minor damage to buildings and property occurred.

One meteorite went though a front of a car, destroying the engine. When the owner of the car attempted to claim on his insurance company, they replied that it was an "Act of God" and would not pay. Outraged, the owner went to the priest of the local church and asked for the money, saying "If it was an Act of God, the Church should pay for his car." The owner never received any money to repair his car!
Professor Sylvester-Bradley, Geology Dept Leicester University, confirmed that the fragments were from a chondrite and appealed for further specimens. Locals were requested not to wash any pieces found, but to wrap them in newspaper and hand in at the local police station.
A piece of the meteorite is on display at the Herbert Museum, Coventry.
sandy..dare not let him go to sleep in case the pea pods take over !!!
On the last Friday in January a 37 foot wide asteroid passed within one fifth of the distance to the moon. It missed earth of course, but the worrying thing was that they only spotted it on the previous Wednsday !
Yes, I did see one in the 70s in the southern hemisphere. IT brightened the sky so much that the police was swamped by people reported someone shining a torch at their windows. It was the only time ever that I started to think that maybe there is alien life. A very unusual experience.

I wonder who owns a piece of meteorite if it falls on your property?
